Description

Tycho Brahe Planetarium. Ole Rømer, orrery, model of 'Planetarium'. Conservator Søren Andersen's model of Ole Rømer's original 'Planetarium' orrery, made in Paris 1678-1679 by Royal Clockmaker Isaac Thuret. The Planetarium was designed by Ole Rømer to demonstrate the orbit of the planets around the sun. There is evidence that Rømer calculated the gears and drives, and carried out the work himself in Thuret's workshop. The orrery is an attempt to reconstruct an accurate copy of the original Planetarium mechanism, and has a large colourful star atlas as background. The machine was part of the permanent exhibition of the Copenhagen Planetarium. Star atlas: Ø 325 cm. All the equipment needed for functioning is included: actuators, computer for drive control, separate control handle, etc.

Lit.: The Planetarium is discussed in 'Geared To The Stars' by Henry C. King.

Ole Rømer (1644-1710) was educated as an astronomer at the University of Copenhagen and worked at the Observatory in Paris from 1672-81. During observations of the moons of Jupiter, he discovered 'the hesitation of light', i.e. its speed, which brought him international fame. After his return to Denmark in 1681, Rømer became the King's trusted man in all technical fields, and was responsible for a number of technical advances, including standardised weights and measures.
