Russian Icon. John the Evangelist in Silence. Saint John brings his hand to his mouth to indicate his silence. An angel at his shoulder inspires him to write the Word of God. The eagle is the symbol for John the Evangelist. Tempera on wood. Pskov region. 18th Century. 31 x 25 cm. Accompanied by brass oklad. Originates from an old Danish icon collection.
