Description

Finn Juhl 1912-1989. 'Chieftain' lounge chair' in teak. Designed in 1949. Produced and stamped by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. Seat, back, and armrests recently reupholstered in cognac-coloured aniline leather. Repaired.

Finn Juhl designed this chair for the Snedkerlaug exhibition in 1949. The piece must be described as the most distinctive and important of all his furniture. The chair's frame was inspired by the weapons and utility items of primitive people. After King Frederik IX had tried the chair, a journalist asked if it should now be called the King's Chair, which Finn Juhl found too pretentious. He replied, 'Call it a chief's chair.' Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]. 'Dansk møbelkunst gennem 40 Aar: Københavns Snedkerlaugs møbeludstillinger', Vol. 3, reproduced and discussed on pp. 124-125.
