Description

Steen Østergaard. Tango Lounge Chair, anthracite-coloured, structured varnished spring steel frame, fitted with loose cushion upholstered in burgundy Italian semi-aniline leather Designed by architect MAA Steen Østergaard 1960. Produced by JV Holding.

Steen Østergaard is a trained cabinetmaker and sculptor who received a bronze medal in 1957. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1960 with the highest honours. Served as an officer in the army until 1962. As a trained architect, Østergaard was employed in Finn Juhl's design studio, 1962-1966, and then became chief designer and developer with Cado, France & Søn, and later Abstracta 1970-1975. He was a carpet designer at Wiltax, 1978-1981. Since then, Østergaard has worked as an independent architect with offices in England, Germany, and France, where he has had a permanent residence for more than 25 years in the city of Nice. Østergaard invented and designed a large lounge chair in a single piece of injection-moulded plastic. He has received myriad well-known prizes in many countries. In addition, Østergaard's designs have been exhibited at all-world exhibitions and museums, including MOMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York). His designs are well known and treasured far beyond Denmark's borders, and his distinctive furniture designs continue to bring high prices at the well-known auction houses. He drew his Lounge Chair in 1960 at the young age of 25, and the chair has since been in great demand ever since. In many ways, it is a difficult chair to produce, and it has now been relaunched by JV Holding. Østergaard is still active as an architect, with both relaunches and new furniture designs.
