Description
First Ark Edition - Paul Auster / Siri Hustvedt. Book object comprising Paul Auster’s previously unpublished short novel 'Alone' from 1969, presumably the author’s earliest text publication, together with Siri Hustvedt’s essay 'Becoming the Other in Translation', written for this edition. First Ark Edition has been published in 2015 by Ark Editions in only six copies to support the nonprofit bookshop Ark Books in Nørrebro in Copenhagen. The book object has been designed and put together by Megan Adie, Aviary Press as well as Rikke Vagner Petersen and Eva Kinch Brøndsted, Ordered By Colour. It is printed in letterpress on 308 g Norma paper by Viking with binder’s board and linen binding with detachable spines. The copy at auction here is no. 1 of 6 and is signed by both authors. 15 x 9.5 cm.
First Ark Edition has two front covers, so disbanding any authorial hierarchy. The book object resembles a traditional leporello book, but distinguishes itself from one by having two spines. The spines can be removed, one at a time or both at once – for the object to be folded out or read never-endingly. When both spines are in place, First Ark Edition forms a sealed box – a completely self-enclosed universe. ‘Alone’ and ’Becoming the Other in Translation’ are printed on each side of the same piece of paper.
The two texts are interesting both individually and together. Paul Auster's ’Alone’ from 1969 is of great literary historical interest and introduces the earliest form of the figure Quinn to print, as well as several other of Auster’s later leitmotifs and elements from his poetics. Siri Hustvedt’s ‘Becoming the Other in Translation’ is about the significance of literary translation for Hustvedt’s own creative development, inspiration and practice. Together, the two texts introduce a common and diverse concept of ’other’ in both the reader, the author and the literature, relevant for both authors’ respective back catalogues.
