Description

A Grasshopper clock following John Harrison, skeleton clock of brass, 2 dials in white enamel, 2 counter-rotating pendulum rods, winding mechanism via steel rope on winch. Solid wooden plinth, loose glass cabinet with door, clock runs for approx. 1 week, key included. On 4 height-adjustable brass feet. Approx. dimensions: H. 44 cm, W. 33.5 cm, D. 23 cm. The clock was running at the time of inspection, but Lauritz.com does not guarantee functionality.
John Harrison was a self-taught clockmaker and inventor from England. In 1714, solved the problem of making a clock able to work on a ship with great precision which continued to work in extreme positions of tilt. The first introduction of precise mechanical timekeeping made it possible for the first time to precisely define the longitude at sea.
