Iron meteorite, fell over 100,000 years ago. Weight approx. 37 kg. Excavated 25 km north of Kitkiöjärvi, Tornedalen. Dimensions 32x21x18 cm. Unpolished.
Near the town of Kitkiöjärvi, an iron-rich dwarf planet fell to earth between 80,000 and 114,000 years ago. The celestial body spilt in the atmosphere before hitting the ground. The first meteorite in the area was found in 1906 by two children. Apart from iron, several unusual metals have been recorded in meteorites from Kikiöjärvi, including troilite (FeS) and stishovite (SiO2).
