Description

Rug, landscape format, India, 18th century, warp of cotton, weft of cotton/silk, pile of silk. Density of 220,800 knots per square meter. Main field featuring coloured riverscape. Two thirds of the field in light blue, pattern allover with fish, dolphins, turtles and a crocodile between water flowers either in bloom or closed, on the water a ship with canopy. Top third with seven trees with birds, on the sides flanked by a palace and a terrace with pavilion. Main border with all-round filigree garland. HxW: 129 x 208 cm, in total 2.68 square meters. Wear commensurate with age, partly minor pile loss and minimal restoration.
Age and evaluation according to the valuation by Hans Eitzenberger, member of the German Bundesverbandes der Sachverständigen für orientalische Teppiche und Flachgewebe (BSOT): 'This is an antique rug from India, which is rare in kind and structure as well as colouration and meets highest collector requirements. - A unique museum piece.' (Expertise from 10th October 2012). Estimate value EUR 30,000.-. Original valuation certificate included.
