John Harrison was a self-taught clockmaker and inventor from England. In 1714, solved the problem of making a clock able to work on a ship with great precision which continued to work in extreme positions of tilt. The first introduction of precise mechanical timekeeping made it possible for the first time to precisely define the longitude at sea.
