Description

Lorenz Petersen (Flensburg 1803-1870): Two-masted schooner with swallow-tailed flag with Frederik (VII)'s crowned monogram off Kronborg, sailing ship in the background presumably with Altona's flag and motor schooner presumably with the English flag, in calm weather. Inscribed 'Capt. C. Ebsen' and signed 'L. Petersen u. P. Holm Gebr. 1862'. In contemporary silvered frame. Relined and on new stretcher. 48 x 64.
History: In the mid-1850s Lorenz Petersen collaborated with his half-brother P. Chr. Holm in painting numerous ship's portraits, which also is shown by the signature of the bothers' paintings from this period. After Lorenz Petersen's death in 1870 his son Heinrich the collaboration with Holm.
