The Eames were US designers, married to each other in 1941, and associated with modern architecture and furniture design the world over. Charles Eames (1907-1978) started his career at the University of Washington, to which he won a scholarship, but left already after two years, presumably because his approach to design was a little too modern, giving rise to problems. Later Charles Eames started an architect practice with Charles Gray and a third partner Walter Pauley.

Ray Eames’ full name was Ray-Bernice Alexandra Kaiser Eames (1912-1988) and she worked with design, art and film. Ray and Charles were former colleagues, and after Charles’ divorce in 1941 they married, Ray taking the name Eames, and here things took off for the couple. They developed Eames House and quickly became leading actors in chair design, and were the first, c. 1940, to create designs in moulded wood. In 2006 the Eames Lounge Chair was part of a big exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
