Mille Kalsmose - Collected Memory - A living archive - Memories of relationships
Year: 2026
Materials: Mailbox, acrylic colored paper with memories of the value of relationships. The mailbox measures approx. 34 cm in depth, 44.5 cm in width and 78 cm in height and weighs approx. 21 kg. The work is part of an ongoing work series Collected Memory, which is a living archive of shared memory and human connectedness. The work series has been exhibited at various institutions around the world, first at the UN Headquarters in New York.

It is a participant-based work, where people are invited to contribute their own experiences or reflections in order to become part of a living archive that is constantly changing. Part of the work consists of handwritten letters that participants have written during my latest exhibition at Sophienholm. These letters serve as both inspiration and testimony to the connections we share. The archive is therefore not just a collection of papers, but a living organism, where each contribution becomes part of a larger memory that is constantly in motion. At the same time, new, blank folded and colored papers are included. Those who encounter or acquire the work can write on them and put them in the mailbox – in a completely traditional way about their experience of the value of relationships in a digital age in flux.

Biography:
Born in 1972 in Horsens, Denmark.
Lives and works in Copenhagen and New York.

Mille Kalsmose’s work ranges from paintings to sculptures and installations. For decades, her work has emerged as mental survival tools that introduce new ways of exploring and understanding human existence and cohesion. The works embody family constellations or, most importantly, the relationship between the individual and the world.

Mille Kalsmose’s work gives form and materializes what is invisible to the eye – this is a driving force and an indispensable desire throughout the work. By combining autobiography with neuroscience, personal experiences with social inquiry, Mille Kalsmose creates artworks that resonate on a wide range of levels. She has worked with a wide range of materials and explores the architecture of memory, identity, psychological mechanisms and spiritual perspectives on life, thereby creating a union of the unconstrained in strongly tactile manifestations.

Kalsmose holds a master’s degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and has studied at the Bio Art Lab at SVA, School of Visual Art, New York and has exhibited at Aaros, Århus Kunstmuseum, EMMA; Museum of Modern Art, Helsinki, KUNSTEN; Museum of Modern Art. Ålborg, Horsens Kunstmuseum, MAVI, Museum of Visual Arts, Santiago, Chile; UN Headquarters, New York, USA;; La Virreina, Centre de Imagen, Barcelona, ??Catalonia; ITAMI Museum, Hygo, Japan; Fundacion Valentin de Madarigada, Andalusia, Spain, Den Frie Udstillingscenter; CCA,Contemporary Art, Andratx, Spain Kastrupgaard Samlingen and others. Her works can be found in several private and public institutions.
