Provenance: The collection after Carl Peter Sander.

Niels Hansen Jacobsen first presented the sculpture 'The Dryad' in a plaster copy of 185 cm in 1918 at the Free Exhibition in Copenhagen. He accompanied it in the catalogue with a poem by Georg Bachmann, translated into Danish by Thor Lange. The poem 'Dryade' reads:

'People's words fall heavy and close
on my chest like heavy stones
out I want to breathe lightly
inhale the breath of the forest floor
at an Elf behind swaying branches'.
