Tupsy Clement was born in 1871 in Norway under the name Martha Caroline Jebbe. After having been in a relationship with Edvard Munch for a period, she married the Danish painter C.F. Clement in Rome in 1902 and subsequently settled in Denmark, where she and her husband spent the summers in Skagen in the years 1908-1920.
Tupsy Clement is often mentioned in connection with her husband, but deserves – like so many other female artists of the time – her own place in art history. The painting offered here clearly testifies to her strong sense of light and texture, and her works can today be admired at both Skagens Kunstmuseum and Kunsten in Aalborg.
